Since the late 90's Simone Friedman had a vision to open a clinic in downtown Toronto to provide evidence based treatment to children and adults with cognitive, communication and learning difficulties. In 2012, after 12 years in private practice working with a core group of incredible therapists focusing in Traumatic Brain Injury, Simone finally found the space she was looking for in downtown Toronto to carry out her vision. She began working to renovate 1232 Dufferin, a beautiful early 20th century bank building.
After completing the clinic project, Simone and her team continued to be inspired by and provide services to the Traumatic Brain Injury population both in the community and the newly renovated clinic. However, the team grew and began to focus service provision in 3 other core areas: Adults with stroke, children and adults with swallowing and oral myofunctional disorders and children with learning difficulties.
In June of 2014, Simone was connected with Ophelia Reid, an Australian Speech-Language Pathologist with a wealth of experience in autism services. The two saw eye to eye on practice procedures and treatment approaches. Simone hired Ophelia to broaden the scope of Therapy Spot's service provision, developing and running programs for autism. To date, these programs have been contributed to by all the Therapy Spot Staff including our clinical director of Autism Service, Jennifer Boyne and our clinical director of Speech-Language Services, Lisa Drake.
